... to the island,
where the shrimpboats tie up to the pilin'.
Give me oysters and beer,
for dinner every day of the year,
and I'll be fine.
So, we made it back from Key West Sunday morning, 7 a.m. It's a 22.5 hour drive, half of which is just Florida. Dave said that the drive from the southernmost point of the U.S. to Pensacola, which is the westernmost point of Florida was "surreal." I said it was boring. Honestly, I slept from Shreveport to East Texas.
If you were wondering, yes, there are photos, almost 100 of them. Check them out on Flickr.
Here's a taste:

Oh wow. Coincidentally, I did some Googling on Key West last week on a whim, as I've always been somewhat intrigued by the place...and wondering if I'd have the nerve to try living there. I changed my mind the moment I read they are frequently ravaged by hurricanes.
I am off to view the photos now.
Great photos. Did you and Dave have to keep reminding yourselves that you were still in America?
The architecture is lovely. What are the locals like? I bet after all that fresh seafood you are turning your nose up at the stuff in HEB...!
Has anyone ever told Dave he looks like someone familiar/famous?
Dave hears all the time that he looks like movie stars and such, a vast array of them, in fact. And yes, the seafood there is amazing... if we could only eat like that all the time.
They call Key West "The Conch Republic" mostly because it resembles a small Caribbean nation more than an island in Florida, that's why so many people find it alluring. However, you're right, it is frequently ravaged by Hurricanes and flooding, so you have to be a certain kind of brave or stupid (or drunk) to live there.
It was a fantastic vacation, and I desperately want to go back already!!!
ahh the beach .. and the palm trees .. looks peaceful. One has all the sun they want and also the shade of the palm tree :)
